Information From the Housing Coalition

May 24, 2024

Dear Members,

We are thrilled to share that Governor Hobbs signed two bills into law yesterday that echo the “YES to housing” call to action we have been rallying around in recent years! Today we celebrate two bipartisan-led victories for Arizonans. We also relay our heartfelt thanks to you who showed up in support, emailed or called your lawmakers to urge their support, and in so many ways took the opportunity to Speak Up for Home.

HB2720, also known as the “Casitas Bill” was signed into law yesterday, legalizing accessory dwelling units (ADUs) in urban municipalities with populations over 75,000.

Similarly, HB2721, also known as the “Middle Housing Bill” was signed into law yesterday, authorizing the construction of duplexes, triplexes, fourplexes, and other smaller scale multi-family developments on parcels zoned for single family development.

Neither of these measures will wholesale address the affordable housing crisis our state is facing. However, both of the measures open up new possibilities for additional and diverse housing supply that meets the needs of Arizonans.

Thank you to Governor Hobbs, Senator Anna Hernandez, Representative Michael Carbone, to our other lawmakers who helped see these bills through, and to all of you who spoke up in support of these creative solutions to housing affordability.

Sincerely,

Nicole Newhouse
